The SC Elite v4 is New Balance's flagship for road racing, from half-marathon to marathon:

Discovered in Boston this winter, the new version of New Balance's top shoe for the longest road races (from half-marathon to marathon) is now one of the best-performing models on the market. With an ultra-maximalist midsole (40 millimeters at heel level) coupled with a curved "Energy Arc " carbon fiber plate, the SC Elite v4 is an extremely responsive and lightweight pair without compromising on the comfort and stability that inevitably come into play on efforts lasting over two hours. So they're just as suitable for elite athletes as they are for runners aiming for their first sub-3-hour marathon.

Highlights

  • Forward propulsion
  • Ultra-soft cushioning
  • Comfort
  • Stability

Weak points

  • Lack of grip on wet surfaces
  • One of the most expensive models on the market
  • High weight for a high-performance pair

FUELCELL PACER V2

The Pacer v2, a jewel of speed and lightness:

Perhaps the most elitist model in the Fuelcell range, the Pacer is aimed at experienced male and female runners looking for a very lightweight model, close to the foot and close to the ground. Also equipped with a carbon fiber plate, this shoe reveals its full potential during fast sessions on the road and track, and in competitions from 5 to 10 kilometers. The ultra-ventilated mesh (unlike that of other models in the range) makes it all the more attractive for the summer season and the most intense efforts. It's worth noting that Emily Sisson, current U.S. marathon record-holder (2h18min29s), prefers to run this model in competition, and will be taking part in the Paris Olympics in a few days' time.

The Rebel is the perfect compromise between comfort and performance:

This is the central model in the Fuelcell range. The Rebel is New Balance's all-round shoe par excellence, with all the qualities of the competition models but without the carbon fiber plate. The result is an even softer, more playful feel, with all the softness and responsiveness of Fuelcell foam. The Rebel is equally suited to rhythmic jogging, fast sessions and even competitions. With this fourth version, the new silhouette features a wider sole for greater stability than in previous years.

The Trainer is your best ally for long rides and endurance training:

This is the most consumer-oriented model in the range, perfectly suited to long outings and training recovery jogs. The thick Fuelcell PEBA foam sole provides extremely soft cushioning and maximum shock absorption. As its name suggests, the "Trainer" has the least racy profile in the range, but is nevertheless equipped with a carbon fiber plate to ease the transition to the front and allow you to let yourself be carried along by the shoe, while compensating for the potential lack of stability that such thick, cushy shoes often suffer from. These qualities are more than welcome on less intense outings, allowing you to let your legs turn and rack up the kilometers in the greatest comfort.

Highlights

  • Amortization
  • Comfort
  • Durability

Weak points

  • Lack of grip on wet surfaces
  • High rate

Fuelcell SC Trainer v3

Our shoe rotation tips at New balance :

Shoe rotation means using two or three different models in your training week. This is something we recommend if you are a performance-oriented profile and run more than 4 times a week:

SC Elite v4 (road racing) - Pacer v2 (fast training and racing) - Rebel v4 (fast and daily training) - Trainer v3 (jogging and long runs)

General opinion of the range

Note:
5/5

Although initially designed to meet the demands of the fastest runners, the Fuelcell range is now more extensive than ever, offering models to suit the needs of all profiles, without compromising on the quality of feel of each. The same ultra-soft, responsive cushioning can be found on every model in the range, coupled with top-of-the-range materials that guarantee a long-lasting experience and excellent foot support. In just a few years, New Balance has succeeded in creating and imposing a rotation that can now serve as a benchmark for any runner's profile.

Size: No differences between models, the size remains unchanged.

    Bonjour,
Pensez-vous que la Rebel peut convenir pour un semi en 1h30? Peut-elle aller jusqu’au marathon ?
Difficile le choix pour ces allures avec un drop <=6 (carbone ou pas carbone?).
    Merci pour votre réponse

    Hello,
Running a 3h15 marathon, I'd like to move towards NB's fuell cell range. However, I don't see the point in having 4 pairs of shoes. If you were to recommend 2, which would they be?
    I'm a runner, 1m88 for 85kg.
    Kind regards

Hi Arthur, the Trainer for training and the Elite for races or training sessions at race pace, for example.

    Hello,

First of all, thank you for your excellent articles.

Returning to running this year and already with a rotation of 3 pairs :

    Mizuno wave rider 27
    NB 1080 v13
    Nike LunarEpic Flyknit (2016)

I'd like to integrate a slightly faster pair that I'd use for races too. I've spotted the NB Rebel V4 and the Mizuno NeoVista. Which of these 2 pairs (or others) would stand out the most and be the most useful in relation to my current rotation in order to obtain a "faster" shoe?

    Thank you in advance.
