Test & review: On Cloudsurfer Next

A year and a half ago, we introduced you to the ultra-comfortable On Cloudsurfer. Today, its little sister - the Cloudsurfer Next - is born, for other sensations and other uses. Who is it for? What's it for? How do we feel about it? We explain it all in this article!

3 reasons to run with the new On Cloudsurfer Next :

Looking for a versatile model?
Unlike its big sister, which is extremely comfortable and soft, the running sensations here are radically different. It's the same welcoming comfort, but the cushioning is much firmer and more stable. But it's not unpleasant - on the contrary! You can go for long runs and jogging as well as for faster sessions such as tempos and splits. Obviously, a performance-oriented runner will use it mainly for jogging, as there are much more dynamic models available from On! But for a runner looking for a shoe for his week's training, without having to rotate, this is a model that could entirely suit him.

You are looking for a model that is affordable:
We're used to seeing higher prices at On due to their premium brand positioning. Here, for €160, you'll find an excellent, comfortable and versatile product that will suit both beginners and experienced riders. At this price, we're in the same price range as our competitors, which is an excellent point for the Swiss brand. And yet there's no loss of quality, with CloudTec Phase cushioning (already present on the classic Cloudsurfer) and Helion midsole, for example.

Looking for a stable model:
With its extremely soft cushioning, the Cloudsurfer - in its classic version - could lack stability, especially for pronated runners. Here, the Cloudsurfer Next doesn't feature pronation support, but the shoe's structure and firmer cushioning offer much greater stability. You can also insert a podiatry insole, for example. You can run in them on roads and paths without any problem. However, a "heavier" runner will be better off with the On Cloudeclipse, a stable model with far more protection and cushioning.

2 points to remember about this new Cloudsurfer Next :

The differences with the On Cloudsurfer released in 2023:
The Cloudsurfer Next is a brand-new shoe in the On range. It does not replace or improve on the Cloudsurfer released in 2023. Rather, it expands the Swiss brand's range, and is akin to the replacement for the "Cloudgo" (which will disappear in favor of the Cloudsurfer Next). The Cloudsurfer Next is a hyper-accessible shoe for all types of runners, with a 6-mm drop and an "accessible" price of 160€. Ideal for someone who wants to test an On model for the first time to discover the technology. It's much more stable than a "classic" Cloudsurfer and safer for a leisure runner. The cushioning is much firmer, too, for greater stability, even if it "relaxes" after a few strokes. "softens" after a few outings.

Competitive positioning :
It's a direct competitor to an ASICS Gel-Cumulus, Saucony Ride 16, HOKA Clifton or Nike Pegasus. The Cloudsurfer Next falls into the category of easy-to-use shoes, aimed at a wide range of runners and allowing them to run on a daily basis. It's ideal for both training mileage and speed, making it a versatile shoe. Although cushioning comfort is not the main asset, due to its firmness, the overall shoe is a success and rivals the models from the other brands mentioned above.
Our shoe rotation tips at on :
Shoe rotation means using two or three different models in your training week.
This is something we recommend if you have a performance-oriented profile and run more than 4 times a week:
- Cloudsurfer Next: endurance (daily training)
- Cloudmonster Hyper: all-round training (long outings and tempo / cushioning & dynamism)
- Cloudflow 4: fast training
- Cloudboom Echo 3: road racing.

General opinion on the shoe
The On brand is finally offering a relatively affordable model. It's true that 160€ isn't cheap, but it's almost the norm these days. As far as the shoe is concerned, there's plenty of comfort, but the fairly firm cushioning is nothing like what we've already seen from On, notably the classic Cloudsurfer version, which only has a similar name in the end. In hindsight, the shoe is a success and will suit as many people as possible. However, there's no revolution in this model either, and it's the same kind of sensations you'll find on competing models.
